For the Buddy challenge:
The girl is a young princess from a wealthy kingdom who is given a baby sphinx as a gift to attempt to make her kindly disposed to the idea of being put in an arranged marriage with a prince she's never met. On discovering the sphinx is as intelligent as she is, and misses her mother, her displeasure grows. She feels she and the sphinx are both trapped in circumstances they never asked for or wanted. So they run away, in hopes of finding the sphinx's mother (and the princess not getting eaten by her mother!) and in hopes of finding a safe haven where they all can live without being forced into anything.
The bag on the princess' hip is a bag of holding. Full of magical crap she found in her father's suites and treasury, the better to ease the journey and hide their trail from pursuers.
